HOW TO APPLY FOR A NIE NUMBER
What is an NIE?
The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is your tax and administrative identification number in Spain. Required for:
- Working
- Buying a property
- Paying taxes
- Studying or starting a business
How to apply for an NIE (for EU citizens)
1. Make an appointment online
- Go to the official website
- Choose your province
- Select:
- "Certificados UE" (for EU citizens)
- "Expedición de NIE" (non-EU)
- Fill in your details
2. Collect the appropriate documents
- Form EX-18 (2x, completed in Spanish)
- Reason for application (e.g. employment contract, house purchase contract)
- Passport (original + copy)
- Passport photos
- Proof of payment of fees (€9.84) via Form 790 - pay at bank or ATM
3. Go to your appointment
- Bring everything: forms, documents, passport, proof of payment
- You will receive your NIE immediately or after a few days, depending on the region
Tips
- Make copies of everything
- Start applying as soon as possible (waiting lists!)
- Inform locally, procedures may differ per province
- NIE is valid indefinitely, so keep it safe
