Spain’s railway system was liberalised at the end of 2020.
Alongside Renfe, private operators such as Ouigo and Iryo now run high-speed services, increasing competition and lowering fares. Infrastructure is managed by Adif. Spain has one of Europe’s largest high-speed networks (AVE). Regional services are often subsidised. New lines use standard European gauge. Safety remains essential.
